awesome little laptop

great battery life, compact, light, versatile. only a couple of things may hold you back from buying it, the processor is not the fastest but it does the job well, and no dvd/cd drive, however the portability makes up for it. has a built in webcam and wifi. couldnt ask for more. the keyboard is a bit cramped but after some use your hands will get used to it.

Lenovo S10-2 Floral Sea Netbook

I bought this netbook about a month ago. So far, I love it! 

The battery life seems to be between 4 – 6 hours, depending on what you’re doing. The keyboard is a little small, but since I’m female, that’s not been a problem for me. The keys are always where I think they *ought* to be, so no complaints, there. The color is just gorgeous, and is more on the plum side, for those who find this important. 

I was pleasantly surprised with the Windows 7 Starter, as I had read horror stories about the limitations it has. This hasn’t been a problem for me, yet, and I really don’t expect it to be. I mostly surf the web, get email, and watch streaming videos occasionally. I wasn’t expecting it to actually HAVE Windows Media Player, since I knew it didn’t have Media Center, but it DOES have the player, and it works just fine. As far as Windows 7 Starter, it seems fairly speedy, once I downloaded Spybot S & D, which is what I use to control startup programs. I run a fairly strict firewall, and some other anti-spy software, and this little machine has had NO trouble keeping up with what I want it to do. 

The sound and picture are decent, it doesn’t get overly warm on the bottom, which my other laptop does, and it has the coolest feature for logging on, which my son LOVES: facial recognition using the included web cam. 

Overall, I would purchase again. Amazon’s shipping was timely, I had it in about 3 business days, although I wish they would pack electronics as well as they do their books. It did have air pillows in the box, but they had worked their way onto one side, so the manufacturer’s box was sliding back and forth inside the Amazon box.

I am more than satisfied with this product. It does everything it is supposed to do. There are a few things I dont like though… Office is a 60 day trial as is McAfee…and i am not getting 6 hrs out of the battery, more like 4. But, this is a good little computer.

The S10 can come in a variety of colors, but they all have one point in common – they are proportionate, and carry nice style aesthetics. Of the netbooks available, I must say the lines from the S10 are some of the most appealing. Our model is a pearl-escent white – featuring a 3-cell battery. Everything seems to flow, from the latchless lid, relatively thin bezel surround, and attractive chrome like accents…if you can’t tell, the S10 does excel within the design department.

The S10 size measures in at making it a 9.8″ x 7.2″ x 1.1″, which is a bit thinner than the MSI Wind we just lately reviewed, and being that it only incorporated a 3-cell battery rather than a 6-cell choice since the Wind, it weighs a little bit less too tipping the scale in at a couple of.4 pounds. It’s quite evenly balanced, making computing 1 hand rather simple with the S10.

The keyboard for a 10.2″ netbook, is instead cramped. I don’t know what happened, as I’m usually awestruck using the keyboards on Lenovo’s recently, but this model, does not strike the same emotion. It’ s not just the cramped feeling, it’s the actual placement of some keys and omission of other people. For example, I’m not sure who’s idea it was to reduce a mute button (or fn combination for instance) but it doesn’t exist that I could find. I’m not one to think about what needs to happen when I need my volume to mute – I just press the buttons and be done with it. With the S10, this isn’t an option. Also, I’m not sure the explanation for having a FN F11 to restore F12 – but it could be in part that the tilde crucial is so apparent isn’t component of the normal crucial layout that seemingly the rest of the laptop world has adopted. Another point, I’m not sure, but I believe “backspace” is 1 word, and not two words mashed together producing it “BackSpace” – but I could be very wrong, somebody correct me here…but Lenovo thinks it’s BackSpace…and I don’t agree.

Amongst those, there are two odd sized layout keys I find on the S10: the smallest tab key because my smartphone and the correct shift key. Not my choice of use or size.

The trackpad however is a good one – firm and consistent travel, nevertheless the buttons are rather noisy along with a small stiff. I don’t know if these work out over time, but as far as I’m concerned – the touch choice on the Snyaptics touchpad ought to suffice most users (and the fact it’s a Synaptics touchpad and not a Sentellic off-shoot) with its side scrolling purpose, makes points manageable albeit tolerable for such a small touch region.

At 10.2″ along with a resolution of 1024×600, it follows the same suite as the MSI Wind – but it’s not as sharp and the viewing agles are a bit off. They’re about the same since the Wind, but I discover the Wind’s LCD having a lot more contrast and brightness.

The S10 features a nice amount of connectivity options for this cost range and target audience who are into extreme mobility and form factor.

Great Netbook, poor OS selection

With the S10-2 Lenovo played a game of give and take. 

On the outside, the netbook looks and feels cheap. Everything is plastic — even the metal looking bits. This makes for a very light netbook, and one that can survive a drop without much damage [speaking from experience]. Even the decorative colors look like a half-hearted attempt at dressing this device up. Finally, the battery has a hump in it that allows device to sit at an angle. This is a great feature because it allows the netbook too cool efficiently, but at the same time makes S10-2 a bit thick. If aesthetics are important to your computing devices this might not be the netbook for you. 

The inside bits show where Lenovo paid attention. The keyboard, although not full size, is large enough type comfortably on, and the keys have excellent tactile feedback. The screen is glossy (but not overwhelmingly), responsive, and bright. My eyes say image quality on the screen isn’t as good as my Macbook Pro or Macbook, but on par with my Dell E6500. The camera is a 1.2 megapixel device with great image quality. The Intel GMA950 Graphics is plenty of GPU to do what this netbook is designed to do; surf the web, read e-mail, and video conferencing. Netbooks and laptops often exhibit signal interference from their own componentry when you listen to audio with good quality headphones/earbuds — not so with Lenovo S10-2. The audio components are excellent, even the tiny speakers perform well; in fact I would say the audio is better quality than all three of my afore mentioned laptops. Wired and wireless networking is just as fast and stable as all my other mobile networking devices. Finally, the N270 processor can perform all these tasks without the netbook feeling sluggish (if you use the correct OS), thanks to it’s dual core nature. 

However, where the S10-2 falls flat is the choice in Operating Systems. I am a fan of Windows 7; it’s a solid operating system, and I enjoy using it on my Dell. However the “Starter” edition of Windows 7 is simply something Microsoft created to so you would pay for upgrade. It is too limited (unless your an advanced user, you won’t even be able to change your desktop background) it wants far more processor, more GPU, and more memory than this netbook can provide. A memory upgrade to 2GB will keep you from wanting to pull your hair out, but the real solution here is to change your OS to something designed to run small devices [not a task for non-technical users].

Great little energizer bunny

When I was looking for a netbook to buy, one of the key points I was looking for was battery life. I already have two other regular laptops, but they die within 2-3 hours. This thing has chugged along for 6+ hours, working great the whole time. Yes it can be a little slow at times and you don’t want to overload it with tasks, but it’s not ment to be a powerhouse gaming machine. 

I got it for my wife to take to class for notes and homework. So far it works great for that exact task. It is also nice not needing to lug about a power cord and sit tethered to the wall. We also use it all over the house for movies, music, and web surfing. I’m contemplating getting another one for myself.
