I’ll get straight to the point.

Pros:

1. It is thin and really light, just like they advertise it.

2. Performance is what you would expect from this kind of a laptop. It was handling everything I have no problem. It was even playing my mp4 1080p movie.

Cons:

1. It came preinstalled with tons of junk from Lenovo. I had to reinstall Windows from scratch as soon as I got it. I bough many laptops before but this one came with exceptional amount of trial software and junk from Lenovo.

2. I bought my laptop with Vista and “free” upgrade to Windows 7. When I called Lenovo and asked about the upgrade they told me that I have to pay shipping and handling () for them to ship me a CD. When I said that I don’t even have a CD rom on this laptop, customer service rep had no clue what to say back. By the way, get ready for customer service located in China. The guy on the phone clearly had no idea.

3. Now to my biggest problem. Two month after I bought my laptop, I was removing and placing back a battery. When I was placing it back to the case something snapped. Apparently it was a plastic hinge that was holding my battery. Now my battery would not hold inside the case. I called Lenovo, and they told me to send laptop back to them, and they would determine if my repair is covered under warranty. 5 days later I got a call from them telling me that my repair would not be covered and I have to pay…7 dollars to replace this part. Keep in mind that I paid 0 dollars for the whole laptop. So they wanted third of that to replace one plastic part. I called them back, and spoke with customer service rep, then a supervisor, but had absolutely no luck. At the end supervisor said that the best he can do is to send me to another Customer Service department that handles this kind of cases. I said fine. He said, they will contact you in…5-7 business days. This was after I did not have my laptop for 5 days already. I was beyond mad, and told them to send me my laptop back. Now I have a scotch tape in the back of my brand new laptop.

Conclusion:

I hope you have better experience with this laptop and with Lenovo in general, but beware, it has poor quality and poor Customer Service.

After spending some time over a few weeks comparing, even going to various stores and testing Asus, Acer, Toshiba and Sony laptops, I finally decided on this little laptop as my choice among the inexpensive ultraportables and I’m very pleased with the U350 overall (hence the five star rating). The Asus machines (U20, U30 and U80) with a comparable processor and other options were very nice and I came close to buying one, but they came in at least 0-0 more for roughly the same specs, but still had no HDMI port like this one. (Of course, you do get the Asus warranty, which I’d say is worth around another 0.) The Acers of equivalent components were also generally a good deal, but came in still -100 more and also didn’t have a 1.3 megapixel camera. This model of the U350 has media card capabilities and the wireless N card, but no Bluetooth (which you get included for 2 more if you buy it direct from Lenovo). Bluetooth wasn’t that important to me and the 7 price tag for this machine through Amazon was the best buy for the buck by far in my humble opinion. The U4100 1.3 Ghz processor is in the Pentium family and according to specs on the Intel site has 2 cores, but is not in the dual core family. It isn’t rocket fast, but none of the ultra-low voltage processors are. Battery life is basically what is reported, roughly five hours from what I’ve been able to ascertain in two days of usage. I’m not sure how Asus and Acer get their machines to go 9-12 hours with roughly the same components, maybe it’s lower lighting, power management, etc. The screen lighting on this machine is excellent throughout the battery life, but if you need 9 hours of time without a power source, go with the Asus or Acer, I guess, and pay the extra money and get certain slightly different tradeoffs. As to complaints here in other reviews about a cheap plastic case whose battery covers break, I’d say that if you force a part into this type of case whether it’s made by Toshiba, Asus, Acer or whoever, it’s going to break. Thanks for the warning, though. Having seen the other machines firsthand at computer stores, my assessment is that most have roughly the same type of lightweight plastic casings, so unless you go with a MacBook Pro and pay 49 for the aluminum case model, this is basically what you are going to get. I guess the Acer has an aluminum top, but there are complaints about the fit of that among reviewers here. The brushed aluminum look on the palm rest for this U350 model is really great addition, as is the patterned cover because you get no fingerprints on either, which is really nice with all the “fingerprint magnets” out there. The mousepad and right and left click buttons seem to me to be a little inferior, which is almost worth a half a star off, but at this price you just need to face the fact you aren’t going to get perfection. I bought the 3 year Square Deal warranty which includes accidental damage for a full 3 years (it’s five star rated and 2 full years more Accidental Damage warranty than the Asus warranty). This is great deal through Amazon and I’ve very been pleased with their service (on-time, undamaged deliveries). I know some of the other low end ultraportables are also great deals, but if you are looking for a machine that is far more than a netbook for just a bit more in price, the Lenovo U350 is definitely worth seriously considering.

UPDATE AFTER ONE WEEK – STILL FIVE STARS

Still very pleased with this little laptop, and I see they’ve dropped the price another to put it under 0. I went by Staples today to pick up some supplies and looked at latest the HP DM3 which they are selling for 9 and it is the exact same construction in terms of the lightweight, durable plastic casing (the ASUS also was roughly the same). I’ve gotten more use to the touchpad and the buttons and they same roughly the same quality as the ASUS and HP models at Staples. Also I noticed my daughter-in-law’s Dell has roughly the same quality touchpad and buttons. I’m still getting five hours of battery life as advertised. I am very thankful for the “aluminum brushed” look of the palm rest, because I don’t have to put up with smudges and fingerprints that come with the glossy black cases. The 1.3Ghz speed of the dual core U4100 is obviously significantly beyond the Atom processors of netbooks and any Celeron processor, and as I said above, it is in the Pentium family and is an ultralow voltage processor, though not specifically in the “dual core” family (but it does indeed have a dual core – search Intel processor specs and it shows this processor does have two cores like the dual core processors). I’m presently running MS Office on this without any hiccups, even Excel spreadsheets, and it does a good job with internet video clips.

IMHO, I’d still say it’s easily the best buy among the lower end ultra-portables since it is only 0 and has the same or better specs than other ultraportables that are asking 0-0 more.

We were searching for a light laptop to work during traveling. We got a better rate in Amazon. When it arrived, the battery was not fitting properly. The plastic hinge was coming out. Laptop was lightweight but the plastic seemed to be of poor quality. We returned and Amazon fully refunded it.

I’ve had this Laptop for 2yrs now and I would recommend the Toshiba models to anyone who is looking for a fully-loaded, quality, priced-right Laptop. This Laptop is quality and I am very pleased from day one. I do not even use my desktop PC anymore. I appreciate the large keys because it seems like I’m using a regular size keyboard. I am using Vista and I haven’t had any problems because after reading all the reviews I realized I needed no less than 2GB RAM. I highly recommend the Toshiba models because the price is competitive with the other models and you will get the value for your money. I recently got an Acer for my mother in February 2010, but that was because of budget–the Toshiba had the seem specs but it cost nearly 0 more. I was really pleased with the Acer too. Personality I would prefer the Toshiba any day.

So, I did extensive research on the ulv-class laptops from Asus, Acer, Toshiba, and Lenovo. My main goal was to buy a mid-range (0-700) culv laptop with Windows 7 to tide me over until the release of the Asus UL80-JT (I3 CULV with automatic switchable graphic cards and 12 hours of battery life), which won’t be released until later in the year.

What I got was exactly that. The reviews complained mostly about the Lenovo customer service, which I have not dealt with personally. However, I have heard that Lenovo’s customer service isn’t *that* bad and it is a smaller company than HP or Dell (you and your laptop will actually end up worse for the wear after dealing with their customer service). No one’s customer service can ever compete with the quality Asus customer service, and I was sad that the price point on the Asus ul30 and ul80 moved back up to around 0 on Amazon and that they were sold out on most other websites, but so it goes.

So, onto the Lenovo, it has a sleek look and you will never have a fingerprint problem. The keyboard is the most ergonomically designed keyboard I have seen on a thin and light laptop and it has the greatest feel to it. The laptop does not feel flimsy at all and seems pretty sturdy all around. It comes with a CD/DVD drive, which is great, since most of the other thin and lights have eliminated an optical drive in favor of weight.

The veriface log-in is a cool added feature.

The screen has really good resolution and the laptop comes with a really decent graphics card. The one obvious drawback to this is that it takes a toll on the battery life. Now, I’ve moved from a normal laptop getting 2 hours of battery life at the most, so I am enjoying the added battery life. However, it is not as good as some of the other culv laptops. I get about 4 hours and 15 minutes on average depending on what I am doing. This is again, great compared to the regular lithium ion batteried-laptops, but it seems pretty average for the culv class laptops with Acer boasting 9 hours and Asus boasting 12 hours. (Asus doesn’t get 12 hours but instead close to 9, but that still rates above the Lenovo). So, I ultimately find myself a bit annoyed when I have to plug the Lenovo in.

The laptop runs cool and quietly and with no real noticeable fan noise.

I think the only con on this laptop is the battery life AS COMPARED to other laptops in its class. Overall, however, I am happy with the purchase and would recommend it to people who are looking to get a less expensive culv laptop, because it ultimately has a better price point than its competitors.Lenovo Ideapad U-450p 14-Inch Black Laptop – Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

First of all, I would like to point out that the laptop is incredibly lite weight and it’s quite sturdy.

– Intel SU4100 consumes only 10 watts at its max. Fast enough for what I do on my laptop. I am student by the way, so portability what came to my mind.

– Intel GMA4500 and GS45 are enough for me. Watch few movies here and there. GS45 consumes 12 watts at its max.

– 250GB HDD Western Digital. Not the best, but surf its purpose. It constantly goes into power saving mode and parks the R/W heads. Creates like a whisper noise. Not audible at all.

– Keyboard is what makes this laptop to stand out even further. Lenovo claim it’s an ergonomic keyboard and lenovo were right. It is very comfortable to type and I make fewer mistakes compared to my previous 15.6″ laptop.

– The design on this laptop is absolutely stunning and is not a finger print magnet. It has this checker design on the lid of the laptop and it’s beveled which means it has some sort of depth to it.

– The speakers on this laptop are actually very loud compared to my previous 15.6″ laptop

Cons

– I would have wanted this laptop with Intel 5100 agn + BT 2.1, but I suppose I am asking too much for its price.

– Came with Windows 7 Home Prem 32 bit, I would have preferred the 64 bit edition, but I immediately erased it and installed 64 bit edition of Win 7.

– Comes with few bloatware which are removable.

– The lid does have bit of flex when pressed from the top

– DDR3 RAM is clocked @ 400mhz because RAM is ½ of FSB with GS45 chipset. Its not an issue as memory benchmarks have shown very little difference between DDR2 and DDR3 RAM, hence it will improve battery life. (Tom’s HW)

[Other Thoughts]

– I performed various tests which stress both CPU and GS45(GPU + memory controller) and I/O (ICH9-M) for certain time and surprisingly SU4100 stayed well below 60C and the total consumption of this laptop stayed below 30watts.(measured using “Kill A Watt” meter)

– I also want to point out that this laptop is nearly silent even under full load. In fact, while surfing web, listening to music etc, the only thing I can hear is the Hard Drive spinning.

– I found that once the CPU temp reaches 50C the fan turns ON, but it’s almost non-audible. I could sleep with that kind of noise. I would compare it say someone breathing through their nose lightly that is how quiet the fan is under full load.

– This laptop also includes DVD/CD RW which not many thin laptops have these days.

–Overall, I am very satisfied with this very thin/lite weight laptop and would recommend this laptop to students and people who adore quiet and thin laptops.
I really like this computer but I did have to call technical support in order to get it connected to the internet, the system came locked, so that was a bit of a pain, but its been working great since then.

Rating:
QUICK SUMMARY: This HP netbook is n-network ready and has good style, functionality and features for its price-point. A somewhat troubled installation process and a few design complaints make it an almost 5-star product. Recommended!

Confused about all the different HP Mini 210 models? Check the bottom of my review for a comparison chart.

WHAT I *LIKE* SO FAR:

- It’s small and lightweight, like any other netbook

- The screen is LED backlit and very bright and colorful

- The keyboard has good tactile feel, and isn’t noisy while using it

- I almost always touchtype the correct key on the keyboard (even the Backspace and Delete keys), even though the keyboard is smaller than my 15″ laptop computer’s keyboard

- It’s not sluggish using Office 2007 programs

- You can upgrade the RAM yourself (without tools!)

- Streaming of my in-home, High-Def home videos went perfectly smoothly

- No vents on the bottom of the netbook, only on the sides, so the netbook doesn’t gasp for air circulation while sitting on your lap

- I could upgrade the RAM with a 2GB memory module

- The upgrade to Windows Professional edition went without a hitch

- The oversized battery tilts the keyboard a bit so it’s easier to type on

- Nice audio sound from the earphone jack

WHAT I *DISLIKE* SO FAR:

- The battery is huge! Check out Amazon’s product pictures and you’ll see it’s oversized — great for long battery life, but *awful* for aesthetic reasons. The bloated battery ruins the svelte form factor of this netbook. Worse, HP currently makes no provision to buy a second, smaller, 3-cell battery that would fit the natural contours of this device (I checked with HP about this, and they confirmed they have no stock of 3-cell batteries for the Mini 210). The upside? It gives the keyboard a pleasant tilt to type on.

- The battery lock is spring-loaded on one side, but not on the other. The side that’s not spring-loaded can be unlocked accidentally and easily, causing the whole battery to half fall-off the back of the netbook (this actually happened to me).

- It uses a power-on switch you have to slide with your fingernail, rather than using a simple, power-on button

- Some indicator lights, like the disk activity light, are placed on the side of the unit where you can’t see them, rather than above the keyboard where you can see them

- I’m not a fan of glossy screens — too many fingerprints to clean!

- HP replaces my [...] homepage with an HP version of [...], and that version doesn’t render reliably when I fire up Internet Explorer

- The edge of the netbook below the keyboard is uncomfortably sharp when you rest your hand on it while typing; I wish HP had used a smoother, tapered edge for hand-resting comfort.

BACKGROUND:

This is my first netbook purchase, although I’m a very experienced computer user. I bought it to use at work to replace my paper notebook and to use Microsoft Office products common in the workplace. I sought for a very lightweight netbook with long battery life, good performance for its size, and a good feel to the keyboard. I looked online and in brick-and-mortar stores, and ordered this HP netbook from Amazon after first examining it in a local retailer who had it in stock (though with the battery removed, which is why I was surprised at how big this netbook’s battery really is).

INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION:

The out-of-box experience started off well. HP includes a big, can’t-miss-it poster that you see immediately after opening the packing box. It concisely describes how to start configuring your new HP netbook. Basically, plug-in your netbook and turn it on, then go through the configuration steps — like choosing your computer’s name and your timezone — to setup Windows 7 Startup edition.

When it comes to setting up the wireless network, I dispensed with HP’s hand-holding setup program since I know how to setup wireless network connections on a computer. HOWEVER, I was baffled for a while trying to figure out how to turn-on the wireless card. I’m used to my Dell laptops, where there is a hardware switch somewhere on the side of the computer. With this HP netbook, there is no WiFi hardware switch. Instead, you have to use an HP software utility for enabling the wireless card. Then, you also have to press F12 to turn-on the now-enabled WiFi card. I’d prefer a slide switch to enable/disable the WiFi card. BTW, the WiFi is b/g/n-network compatible.

I encountered a problem with the battery receptacle on the netbook. When I first tried inserting the battery, it just didn’t seem to fit very well. Mind you, I am *careful* with new electronics I buy, so I didn’t want to force the battery without knowing what kind of force was really necessary. I did apply a fair amount of pressure to insert and lock-in the battery, but after the first reboot, the whole netbook appeared to have just died! All I saw was a black screen and a white cursor after I slid the power-on switch. I was nearly ready to pack the whole thing back to Amazon when I returned to the battery that was hard to install. I detached the battery and looked at the netbook’s pin receptacle — one of the pins was bent! I used a steak knife to unbend the pin and tried reinserting the battery once more — it slid more easily this time, and the netbook subsequently powered-on normally. I’m convinced the pin was bent off the factory assembly line. So, if you buy this netbook, examine the battery pins at the back of the netbook to make sure they’re straight!

Once you connect to the Internet, you have to do all the latest patching of Windows 7 (other programs will automatically try to get updated, too, like Java and Adobe Reader). I did the essential patching to Windows 7 only, because I needed to deal with the bloatware.

This HP netbook comes with some bloatware and assorted shortcuts that I immediately removed, including Norton Antivirus (*hate* it – use Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free, instead), a 60-day trial version of Microsoft Office Home & Student Edition, Adobe AIR, Times Reader, a bunch of Windows Live programs, and a bunch of HP programs. I uninstalled everything except the HP stuff, since I’m not certain what each HP program does at this point. HP is baked-in to Internet Explorer, too, in ways that make it hard to remove. There are a few other unknown programs I’m leaving for the time being. I’ve seen worse cases of bloatware on a new computer, so this actually wasn’t too bad.

After uninstalling what I could, I installed Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise Edition, Microsoft Security Essentials, and my favorite utilities. The installation of Office went smoothly, including the subsequent Internet activation of the software.

Even after uninstalling a lot of crapware, I used MSCONFIG to find more than a half-dozen, non-Microsoft services that automatically start-up when booting this netbook (these aren’t in the Startup folder, either). One of these services — I suspect the HP service that enables the WiFi card — interferes with my automatic backup to my Windows Home Server. I tried disabling all these services, but then the audio sounded *awful* without the “IDT Audio” service, so I re-enabled that service. What does this mean to you? Use MSCONFIG (Click the Start button, then type MSCONFIG) to disable these unnecessary, mostly HP services unless you really have a reason to use them.

All of this takes several hours to do.

USABILITY:

I’ve only owned this HP netbook for two weeks, so I can’t say I’ve had a lot of experience with it as yet. So far, I like using it well enough. It boots up to the login screen in 45-50 seconds (Note: after I upgraded the RAM to 2GB, it takes about 35-40 seconds to get to the login screen). It takes about another minute after you’ve logged in to start-up Windows Desktop and the start-up programs. Starting Microsoft Word 2007 takes 10 seconds. In my home, where I have all g-network devices (but an n-network router), this HP netbook will connect with a speed of no greater than 65Mbps — slightly faster than a g-network device. If I was able to convert all my devices to n-network connections, I could turn-off mixed mode on the router and achieve much faster n-network connection speeds. Be aware of this if you have an n-network router with g-network devices attached to it — you won’t get the benefit of this netbook’s n-network capability.

In general, the speed is good enough for regular computing needs. My general purpose computer is a 2.5Ghz, Core 2 Duo, 3.5GB RAM, 15″ Dell XPS M1530 laptop. This netbook obviously is slower than my 15″ laptop! Sometimes scrolling large Amazon product sheets takes a bit of time, and sometimes I have to wait a bit while this netbook chugs away at some compute-intensive tasks. In general, though, I find the speed to be suitable for my casual work.

Playing audio and video through Windows Media Player was a pleasure, thanks to WMP’s audio Enhancements (which are hard to find, sadly).

WINDOWS 7 STARTER EDITION:

Know what you’re buying when you get this (or any other) netbook with Windows 7 Starter Edition. This edition of Windows has fewer features than even Home Basic, and much fewer than Home Premium or Professional editions of Windows 7. You *can*, however, use Microsoft’s Anytime Upgrade to move from the Starter edition to a higher-level edition. It took me one day to decide to spend and extra 9 to upgrade from the Windows 7 Starter edition to Windows 7 Professional (upgrading to Home Premium costs ). With the Starter edition, there is no Windows Aero user interface, you can’t choose themes or even Desktop wallpaper, you don’t get Windows Media Center, no Sticky Notes, and you can’t even move the Taskbar (I like my Taskbar on the vertical left rather than bottom horizontal). You can use Windows Briefcase — which has been around since Windows 95 — to synchronize data with other computers, but it’s a pretty wretched, problem-filled technology (as I found out this morning while synchronizing with my home server). Windows Professional replaces Briefcase with rock-solid Offline Files & Folders (my favorite feature of the Pro edition) which is what corporate America uses to keep data portable and synchronized.

The battery life is advertised at 9.75 hours, but that would only be true if you are playing Solitaire on the dimmest screen setting possible, with no disk activity and Internet connection turned off. I use Battery Bar (freeware) to watch over battery power. It reports I get a little more than 6 hours of power from the battery (I’m using WiFi half the time, and the screen is lit at 50%).

UPGRADABILITY:

You *can* add more RAM to this netbook. Do a Google search on “how to upgrade RAM hp mini 210″ to see a great video on the details of that. I performed an upgrade to this Mini 210 netbook, swapping out the 1GB memory module for a 2GB module (Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory. For that matter, the process for upgrading would let you swap out other internals, too, like a different network card or different hard drive. Pulling off the back of the netbook is a little unnerving because you don’t want to bend or break the back cover, but I was able to do so without a problem — the cover just snaps on/off.

CONCLUSION:

The one thing I dislike most about this HP netbook — the huge battery — is the one thing I’ll appreciate at work, since I won’t have to recharge the battery between or during meetings anymore. In fact, after two weeks, I’ve made friends with the oversized battery. I think the problem with being unable to get a second, smaller, 3-cell battery is a temporary issue related to the January 2010 release of the Mini 210 netbook line. It’s the little design quirks — placing indicator lights where you can’t easily see them, battery lock switches that too easily unlock — that make this an almost-perfect little netbook rather than a perfect netbook.

*** MARCH 17, 2010 UPDATE

After living with my Mini 210 for three weeks now, I do want to mention one issue I have with this Mini 210. Not infrequently, the network card inexplicably drops and reconnects with my home network after a period of time. I have a Linksys N-network router. Also, I use a Windows Home Server to take nightly backups of all my networked computers, but this netbook won’t wake-up overnight to be backed-up. Instead, the backup process only begins in the morning when I lift the screen. These two problems work together sometimes because the backup process will fail because the network connection keeps disconnecting/reconnecting. Rebooting the netbook clears up the connection issue, though, so I can manually backup the netbook, but it’s not an automated solution. I’m waiting on HP’s second-level support to explain the problem with the netbook not waking-up out of a sleep state. As for the disconnect/reconnect issue, I’m not sure what to do about that issue. Since I upgraded the operating system to Windows 7 Professional, HP is a little reluctant to help me. If you buy this unit, don’t upgrade the operating system until you *know* you have no issues with your Mini 210.

**** APRIL 9, 2010 UPDATE

After wrangling with HP Support regarding my wireless issue (which is mostly confined to a problem where my Windows Home Server can’t wake this netbook when it’s in a sleep state, and also performing a manual backup often fails because the wireless connection drops/reconnects repeatedly, causing the backup to fail), I’ve given up. Weirdly, I *can* sometimes get a successful backup to my server, but not always. I haven’t figured out why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. HP Support balked at my suggestion to replace the b/g/n card with just a b/g. Since ordinarly I don’t have any trouble with the wireless — I was on vacation last week and had no troubles connecting to several different wireless networks — I’ll just deal with the inconvenience of not having my netbook awakened overnight to be backed up automatically by my server. Maybe HP will one day issue an updated driver for the wireless card and/or update the BIOS so the wireless card can awaken this netbook when it’s in a sleep state. The whole ordeal affirms my 4-star rating. This netbook is almost perfect, but not quite perfect.

…Since the iPad hasn’t been released yet, I bought one of these to show my design portfolio to clients. And I must say, I’m impressed. Gorgeous, minimal design, bright, beautiful screen, effortless set-up (it connected to my wireless network without a hiccup, unlike an Asus EEE I bought, then returned, a little while back). But best of all, this thing is ZIPPY! Videos load and play super-fast. Great little machine.

Jump Lists
New in Windows 7, Jump Lists take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right-click a program icon on the Windows 7 taskbar. (You’ll also find them on the Start menu.) What you see in a Jump List depends entirely on the program. The Jump List for Internet Explorer 8 shows frequently-viewed websites. Windows Media Player 12 lists commonly-played tunes. Your Jump List missing a favorite? You can “pin” whatever files you like there. Jump Lists don’t just show shortcuts to files. Sometimes they also provide quick access to commands for things like composing new e‑mail messages or playing music.

Improved Windows Taskbar
In Windows 7 you can “pin” favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. Not crazy about the icon lineup? Now you can rearrange them any way you like by clicking and dragging. Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews–a big time saver.

Snap
Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again–and your windows are back.
(An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system’s performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

Designed for use in ultra-thin laptops to balance the competing needs of high performance with battery consumption, the Pentium SU4100 features Intel SpeedStep technology, helping your system to dynamically adjust processor voltage and core frequency to decrease power consumption and heat production. It also comes with built-in Execute Disable Bit technology, which helps keep your laptop safe from viruses, worms, and other malicious attacks.

November 21 Review Actualization

Well, it has been almost a month since I bought my T135 and I can say I love this little Titan.

Pros:

-LIGHTWEIGHT

-Powerful. With Windows 7 64 edition, I can get as much performance as a my other Core 2 Duo Toshiba Sattellite A135 laptop.

- I can get 9 hours plus of battery life (Eco Mode). As per the other person stating that he can get only 4 hours of battery life, that is in full power mode. Try to get 4 hours of battery life at full power from any other machine and you will fail miserably

- Great Graphics

- Great sound if you do as I stated above:

- Wifi 802.11N!!! I mean, I an get my 802.11N signal from some 200 meters in my garden!!!

- Gorgeous looks

-FAST, FAST, FAST

I have edited video and music (iTunes and a couple of DVD rippers) and it does them in a couple of minutes

- IT’S a TOSHIBA!!!!

- Video conferencing (Skype and Messenger) it’s really good, although the camera it’s only 1.3 megapixels

- After 10 hours of use, at full power, it barely gets warm. You can put it on your bag right away

- Ultra Low Voltage means Ultra Low Energy Consumption. I mean guys, we have to be environmentally conscious. This babe just uses 19V of energy at full power, down to 8-10 Volts at Eco Mode.

NEUTRAL

- I hate on every laptop (no matter what brand) the touch pads. I always use an external mouse.

CONS

- You can do a fingerprint exam on the laptop. I do not know why it gets so finger dirty (and believe me, I wash my hands very often). I bought a GelySkin for the exterior and it’s a great add-on

Hope this review is usefull

Rating:
The T135-S1310 has been great and really fits what I needed. I wanted more than a crappy netbook but also did not want a super bleeding edge K notebook. Full size keyboard was really a plus and I am sure glad a spent a little more for something completely useful.

The S1310 uses the new ultra low power dual-core Pentium processor and scores 932 on Passmark. The laptop runs faster than my two year old Core Duo.

The size of the new screens is great and 13″ is a true happy medium. These also make the overall machine size shallow so you have room on an airplane.

The finish is really cool looking but fingerprints abound on the lid, inside and even the keyboard – whatever!

Keyboard works pretty well if you are a soft touch typist and the keyboard layout is just fine with lots of reused keys to get all the functions. In one review there was no ‘hardware’ volume control (there is FN+3 / FN+4)

Screen is very glossy like many are today. I have not owned a glossy screen laptop before and I find it somewhat irritating when sitting with a window at my back – its tolerable but I choose where I sit.

Preloaded software was minimal and getting the laptop stripped of all the extra junk was a small task. Once complete a set of back-up disks were made per the instructions.

I rarely if ever use a CD/DVD so this suite me well – not having to suffer the weight penalty. I purchased a ‘LG GP08 Lite’ which self-installed with Win 7 – I never used the software included and it was up and operating in minutes to burn back-up / restore media. [I did not purchase the Toshiba external device due to bad reviews]

Making of back-up media was flawless using the Toshiba utilities.

Bluetooth seems to work great – you will want a portable mouse and my Logitech was connected easily to the T135-S1310.

Wireless N is much appreciated for both range and speed.

The touchpad like expressed in other reviews is not the best effort and way worse than my 5 year old laptop this replaced. My first T135-S1310 I returned for several reasons and the touchpad had serious latency [but not one of the reasons it was returned.] The replacement on which I am drafting this does not appear to suffer the same problem. The two were probably made on the same day in the factory and have the same drivers but even in eco mode it is responsive. The buttons are very hard to press and a tap on the touchpad is better than trying to use the mechanical switch.

Audio sucked at first – I did raise the graphic equalizer in “Smart Audio” / Smart EQ but this is just a work around for a bad driver that hopefully will be updated. [UPDATE 12/13/2009 - New Conexent Audio Driver Released, upgrade to rev. 4.98.16.61 and the sound seems fine to me. I have been watching a lot of video lately with the speakers and find it fine]

My first T135-S1310 had a couple of operational issues. The key one was flakey Wi-Fi. It would not stay connected to my D-Link 615 [Wireless N] while every other device in my house would….strange. Anyway this replacement is working fine.

Toshiba Customer Service – For addressing the above issues, troubleshooting and resolution of obtaining a new machine locally at the vendor was just fine: they did not call me back as promised, but when I called they had all the 2nd or 3rd tier support notes and approval to return the unit for replacement: hassle free.

Sleep Mode – The machine comes to life very fast and gets re-connected to the network before you can log yourself into Windows. Contrary to other reports posted here mine recovers and connects to the WLAN in seconds.

Form-factor is really great. The sloped or wedge design and lip from the battery give you something to safely rip and hand on to this glossy carbon fiber looking masterpiece: if you had wet or oily hands it is likely to slip out if you are not careful. Also it makes it very simple to pull out from your briefcase / laptop bag as you have something to really hang on to. I got a great little Sumdex bag for which fits it great and has just enough room for a file folder or two, some paper and the charger + travel mouse.

Also on form factor, these laptops are just slightly larger than a sheet of (US) paper. What does this mean? It is essentially the same size as file folder which means you can fit a couple file folders, tablet of paper etc. in your tiny laptop bag and maybe only carry one thing with you.

Other Ports – Not yet tested / used except the USB port has worked great as does the MiniSD memory card reader.

So far I score this machine quite high. I love the form-factor, performance is just fine, Wireless N is great to have, screen is great, battery life is excellent. My only complaints which are minor are that its hard to keep clean (looking) due to fingerprints, the audio is marginal at best [better after new driver release from Toshiba], touchpad and related buttons should be better in 2009.

I do recommend this type of machine to those looking to not waste -475 for a pure netbook with a Atom processor (Passmark +- 300) and step up to a Netbook+ for a small amount more and get real performance AND great battery life. Spend the extra to get a dual core processor too and avoid the similar computers with the other processors like the SU2700 etc.

The laptop is awesome with few drawbacks not already noted (glassy surface = fingerprints all over). The battery life is great, screen fantastic, keyboard a little slick but adaptable. My big issue is with Toshiba support. It took me nearly a month to convince them that the machine had a defective wireless card and/or antenna out of the box. I should note that I did all of the troubleshooting for them and if I didn’t know my way around the technology wonder if I would still be using a machine that only connected when 2 feet from an access point.

Eventually I was bumped up to “Level III” tech support after about three weeks, but they never called me back. I then had to go back to square one and basically demand that they clear the way for me to ship it to the depot for repairs. The machine went out the next day using their shipping partner (UPS) on 11/19 and I am still waiting for its return. I have twice called Toshiba support, had to go through a whole litany of questions before they transfer me to the Repair Depot, and then I get to wait on hold for 25 – 35 minutes before I give in, leave my call back number, and of course NEVER GET A CALL BACK.

UPDATE: I finally got through to talk with a depot technician, and was told that they didn’t have either the replacement wireless card or antenna in stock and that it could be another 10 days before they can make the repairs. Now I have been on hold with their customer support for over 30 minutes, as I try to get my warranty extended since the machine has basically been useless for the first 1 1/2 months. This is my first Toshiba, and I can only compare to IBM/Lenovo and Dell support, which run circles around what I am experiencing now with Toshiba.

Bottom line = great machine if it works, but get ready for abysmal service if things go wrong

I gave this netbook 5 stars. I bought it for 289 and wasn’t expecting a supercomputer for the size or price. I use it mainly for the internet and Microsoft Office. Didn’t have any problems with the wireless at all. It has great battery life and a battery life extender feature that only charges it 80% if you want to extend the life or 100% if you need the extra power. Runs about 6 hours with the 80% charge. The keyboard is easy to use. Windows 7 is limited, but again.. for the price what were you expecting? Almost all new netbooks come with Windows 7. I didn’t buy the dvd drive and so far haven’t had a need for it since all programs you can install via download or flash drive. The build in SD slot is handy for downloading pictures from your digicam.

Built in webcam is also a neat little feature for web conferencing. The processor is a bit slow, you need to know that this is not a desktop replacement laptop. Web and Office are the most this thing can handle at once. I did look up buying an extra ac adapter from Samsung and it was pretty expensive compared to how much the netbook cost. I uninstalled a lot of the programs that came with the computer which also helped boost performance. I upgraded to 2 gigs of ram which helped a lot also. Overall a great deal and I would recommend it for the road, for class or for an extra computer.

You’re buying a netbook, not a full fledged powerful computer. Know its limitations.

I like this Netbook. BUT it’s barely functional without 2GB of Ram. I’m no geek, the difference is incredibly noticeable. I had big problems with Flash at sites like Hulu and reviews said that the Atom processor can’t really run flash but not true – the problem was trying to run it with the 1GB. With 2GB this netbook will do everything you need it to do.

Please see my full review on the blue variant here: Samsung N150 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook – Up to 7 Hours of Battery Life. The variants are all the same, with the exception of color. The blue is a matte blue, and this one is a shiny black. After rolling out 3 of the blue ones, I saw that this black one was available for a great price. While I’m not a fan of the shiny black, only the lid is matte, the inside is a nice matte black with a red accent trim around the side.

I’ve had some some time with this model and I’m very happy with it. Battery life has been good, they keyboard is good, the matte screen is a godsend compared to the trend towards gloss, and most importantly, the machine is extremely quiet. When the fan does run, you just can’t hear it, it’s obscured by the quiet hard drive noise. For those of you who are concerned with having a quiet machine, you’ll be very happy. The trackpad buttons would be my only complaint, I feel they could be positioned a bit better, but the trackpad itself is very good.

This is a great laptop for the money and I would buy it again.

Pro’s:

Light compared to some other laptops (LED vs. LCD screens usually)

Screen is very bright and easy to read

HDMI allows output to HDTV (also for using Media Center on the HDTV)

4GB RAM

Good battery life (it was running for 3.5+ hours the other day)

10-Key number pad

5-1 card reader (for plopping in an SD card from a digital camera/camcorder)

Con’s:

Fingerprints are highly visible on laptop cover — glossy black

Keyboard layout is cramped with certain keys (arrow keys, delete key)

Speakers do not sound as good as my 3 year old Toshiba laptop

No physical button for volume control — it’s software controlled via keyboard/Windows.

Addt’l comments:

I also have a Lenovo T61p and the HP is lighter, has better battery life, and a softer keyboard (which I prefer-the Lenovo/Thinkpad line is too stiff for me). The Lenovo performs slightly better in every day tasks (faster hard drive & cpu) and a fair bit faster in graphics intensive applications (e.g. games).

How can I express how incredible this machine is? Well let me try. Two weeks earlier I bought the Vista cousin of this machine that had a Pentium and only 1400/900 display (blech!) and it was a bit sluggish. After I saw an Office Depot flyer advertising this beauty for [...] with [...] rebate, I returned the Pentium to Best Buy, who didn’t have this machine. This machine is a tremendous value. Huge hard drive, 4 gigs of ram, WONDERFUL keyboard (all the HPs have the best-engineered keyboards I have seen on any laptops, large and small). And 1600×900 instead of 1400×900 like some of the other models. I agree that the power cable should be on the left side, in fact on the one I returned it was. And yes, the speakers are underwhelming. But this is no “gaming rig”, this is a business desktop replacement, period. Battery life? It says up to 4 hours by I get between 2.5 and 3 hours, and with the powersave mode, just a bit over 3 hours. The lesser cousin didn’t even get 1.5 hours.

Do not pass go, do not collect [...] (although you will collect [...] in rebates), just buy this machine!

I bought this to replace an older 15.6 inch laptop to be my main home computer. I just could not see investing half or more of the cost of this in a netbook. Boy am I glad I did. The 17.3 inch screen is simply incredible.

These are the ways the 17.3 inch screen helps. First the screen itself is really nice. My photos look fantastic and DVDs look superb. Netflix streaming and Hulu are so-so but that is more the limitations of software than of the screen itself. Many websites take advantage of the larger screen as well and it just feels right. It feels like my work desktop screen. Second and possibly of more value is the keyboard. BY FAR the best laptop keyboard I have ever used. It is even better than my stand alone keyboard at work. Finally a true full size, large key, awesome to type with laptop keyboard. And what I thought was a bad design aesthetically, the large blank space beneath the keyboard with just the mouse controls. Guess what? It is perfect for laying your hands down as you type. I know keyboard is not the first thing that comes to mind when buying a computer and it probably shouldn’t be the first thing. BUT it should not be under-rated either.

As for the computer itself. I am really digging Windows 7. I bought this on Black Friday and so far no problems whatsoever. 4 GB is nice. The 6600 processors are nice solid performers. There are better in laptops but for me doing multimedia activities and home office activities this computer more than meets my needs. Everything worked great right out of the box. Webcam works great and not too much installed software. The student and home Office trial means if you end up buying it (Amazon usually has the best price around) it is already installed you just need the key. That was kind of nice. The 60 days of Norton gives you some time to try it, be protected, and make a decision on the security software you like so that is also helpful.

But ultimately what should make you choose this over the numerous other configurations HP offers is the screen size. Any slight added bulkiness and weight (around 6.5 odd pounds) is more than made up for me with how much fun it is to have a large laptop screen and a real full-sized comfortable, fantastic keyboard. Let others have their 10 inch products…17.3 for me from now on.

PLUSES: Takes 2gb memory module; SD card can be used for ReadyBoost; easy access to memory, PCI-e card slot, and hard drive via “pop off” bottom cover; available slot for PCI-e card (in my case, a Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, mail order, but you may want to insert a 3G card etc.); MATTE SCREEN for glare free viewing; more ergonomic keyboard than most in this category; earphone jack is also compatible with “headsets” with combined stereo earphones and mono microphone; no bottom vent slots that are easy to block if set down on a carpet or other soft surface.

MINUSES: Shorter battery life (on this entry level 3 cell battery model); “standard” netbook screen resolution (there is an HP Mini 210 HD version available with a higher than normal resolution screen); “simpler, ” non-multi-gesture touch pad (but it works very well); “speed step” is not implemented, although the N450 Atom chip now supports it (see the Asus 1001p if you want this feature for extended battery life); fan runs a little more to circulate air, there are no bottom slots to pull air through; no stereo microphone slot.

Since these netbooks have a built-in microphone on the screen, and speakers under the keyboard, it’s easy to Skype on them without a headset in “speakerphone” mode.

On the horizon (next 3 months): N470 Atom processors running at 1.83 ghz instead of the N450 in the current models running at 1.66 ghz; but the fact that this one has a PCI-e card for the Broadcom Crystal HD card is probably more important than the upcoming boost in speed (which will also run the battery down more quickly).

INITIAL IMPRESSSIONS:

Prices have come down on the HP Mini 210 series at Amazon to the point where there is no reason to go with another maker (Acer is generally the price leader) unless you are looking for a particular feature (like wireles “n” instead of “g”, a 6 cell battery for the same price etc). As promised by the reviews I read, the HP Mini 210 is slightly better designed (keyboard doesn’t flex, keyboard is more ergonomic) and finished than its competition (I have owned Acer, Gateway, eMachines, and MSI Wind netbooks – no Asus so far).

The HP Mini 210 is also “cleaner” finished – no advertising stickers on the front panel below the keyboard, even the Win7 license sticker and other “bottom of computer” stickers are gone, the Win7 license sticker is inside the case (where it can’t get smudged, a big plus, should you set it down on a gob of jam on your breakfast counter).

I purchased this 3 cell battery model expressly to keep weight down and keep the case smaller (the 6 cell battery version isn’t flush to the case). I got to save as a result, which is an extra bonus. The old HP Mini 110 was rated at 3.75 hours with a 3 cell, with the new chipset in this one, battery life jumps to 4.25 rated hours. Keep in mind reading the NY Times on line with the screen dimmed will give much better battery life than watching transcoded h.264 videos with full screen brightness (in non-geek speak, reading is less taxing than movie watching).

Please note this has a MATTE screen. Not impressive in a showroom, where glossy screens just seem to sparkle, but MUCH better for actually watching video and working, no reflections to reduce image quality. Matte screens are actually rarer than the glossy variety – most Acers are glossy, the Asus 1001p (nearest competitor to this HP Mini 210 “no frills” edition) is matte too.

Manufacturers approach upgrades 3 ways: the Acers generally have little hatches held down by screws and snaps which allow access to the memory module, available PCI-e slot, and hard drive; MSI has no hatches but lots of screws (to remove the entire back panel) and an ominous “warranty voided!” sticker; and this HP seeming has no hatches OR screws.

Fortunately before this arrived I was reading the HP on-line documentation (which is much better than Acer’s and eMachines) and they showed how to pop off the bottom panel to access the memory module, PCI-e slot, and harddrive – it’s pretty easy to do, and I marveled at HP’s design team when I snapped it back together. The PCI-e slot, BTW, is included in most netbooks so you can install a 3G telephone wireless card; some netbooks have two such slots; some have a slot shared with the wireless LAN card; but this HP has a single, uncluttured slot and I used mine for the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator card. This card is designed to accelerate certain video streams (but not all); it is supposed to work with Windows Media Player if it is decoding H.264 video (the current “standard”); with Hulu and other sites running Flash for video support (but not too well yet, Flash 10.1 has not yet been released and is still buggy); and with some DVD/BluRay software player programs. For mail order from Hong Kong (off eBay) I was willing to give it a try.

This HP accepted a standard netbook memory module upgrade to 2gb without a hitch – no BIOS adjustments required. Check crucial dot com for memory specs; usually, but not always, when Amazon tells you other customers ordered a particular memory module to go with a particular netbook, you will be ok.

The fit and finish, ergonomics, and software welcome windows on the HP are much nicer than on any of the Acer variants (Acer makes Gateway and eMachines too) or the MSI’s I have – even the keyboard is easier to use, although still shrunken. The mini-led’s (really tiny dots) on the wireless function key on the top row of the keyboard, on the power slide switch on the side of the keyboard, and on the other side of the computer to indicate hard drive activity, each looks very classy. Be careful about pressing the top row function keys – unlike other netbooks, where you have to press the Fn activator key next to the space bar to access netbook functions (like wireless on or off, speakers on or off, volume, brightness) on this HP the top row keys default to netbook functions, and you have to use the Fn key next to the space bar to use them as normal F1-F12 function keys – while trying to hit F11 to maximize a browser window, I accidentally turned off my wi-fi.

I would have preferred to have the power switch under the cover, where it can’t accidentally be activated – it is on the right side of the case instead.

The touchpad works well – I don’t have my usual problem accidentally clicking when I meant to slide.

Although Pg Up and Pg Dwn aren’t labeled on the arrow keys, they are actually there, and activated by the Fn key near the space bar. The arrow keys themselves are laid out nicely in inverted “T” style.

Initial set up operations and downloards were quite zippy, felt quicker than on a 1gb Acer ao532h I just returned (but that may have been a function of the limitaton to 1gb on that Acer). Here are the Windows Experience Index numbers for this HP with an SD card inserted in the card reader and set up for ReadyBoost:

Processor, calculations per second: 2.4

Memory operations: 4.6

Graphics, Aero Desktop: 3.1

Gaming Graphics: 3.0

Disk operations: 5.3

Processor power # is the same as on my recent Walmart special eMachines 250 (N270 chipset, same as Aspire ao250 etc.), as are all the other numbers EXCEPT Graphics, Aero – Aero graphics on this new chipset jump from 2.1 to 3.1, a sizeable increase. (This number is not influenced by the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator card I added, it is the same number I saw on an HP Mini 210 at Costco).

So basically the new chipset, just introduced in December 2009, mainly just saves battery power, with some small performance increases – except for the graphics, which is one generation better than the last GMA 950 processors but not capable of DirectX functions (you have to get a machine with GMA 4500 or an Ion for that). (FWIW the new N450 chips also run Win7 64 bit, and have Speed Step instructions for changing the clock speed to save power on netbooks that have software support built-in).

I don’t intend to load a lot of programs on this netbook, so the 160 gb hard drive is fine for me. Part of that space is used by HP for a restore partition (in lieu of providing restore disks), and that restore partition, which mostly goes to waste, is thankfully smaller than usual.

If you intend to haul around a lot of converted video or lossless music (FLAC or Apples loss-less) or photos, you should definitely pop the extra for the 250gb harddrive editions. My personal strategy is to use an external USB hard drive to hold my “library” and just download to the netbook as needed, so I am not as sensitive as some to hard drive sizes, and can remember then an 80gb hard drive in a laptop was “big.”

Finally, there is one very nice “feature” on this netbook that the others I have seen don’t have – it doesn’t have any vent slots on the bottom. It is engineered to vent solely through the side vent. This means you can actually set it on your lap or a soft surface without blocking any vents and overheating the unit. With our other netbooks and laptops we are scrupulous about placing them on a laptop board or cutting board, to keep access to the air vents open, but on this one we don’t have to worry about that. I’m good about keeping air vents open, but if you have kids who are going to set a netbook down on a plush carpet or on the bed, the HP Mini 210 is a better choice – they only have to keep the one set of side vents free and clear. Conversely, with no bottom vents, the bottom tends to get hot, but this does not bother me.
The HP Mini 210 is a great netbook overall. It features a Intel GMA 3150 which is capable of streaming video over sites such as youtube, hulu, etc; it doesn’t stream any type of HD that great, however. I was even able to play older games such as Deus Ex, Aliens vs. Predator and even Unreal Tournament just fine. If you can’t afford to pay the extra 0 for the HP 311 which sports a Nvidia ION, this netbook will serve you well.

The keyboard is 93% full size and is great to type on. I’m a computer science student and I was delightfully surprised to see how comfortable it was to program on this netbook. If you plan to do any type of creative writing or programming, this netbook is ideal for that.

I admit, it’s taking me awhile to get use to the slower execution speeds and limits of multitasking with a netbook, but this HP seems to be faster then other netbooks I’ve tried. As long as you aren’t trying to perform more then 2-3 tasks at a time, all is well and speedy.

My major grip is with the touchpad. The left and right buttons aren’t independent of the touchpad itself; you can move the mouse if you move your finger within either click buttons. I like to keep my finger on the left button as a I navigate the touchpad with my other finger, but on this netbook it causes the pointer to jump around the screen. It’s just going to take a bit to change my style, but I would have preferred two buttons that were separate from the actual touchpad.

Battery is life is advertised at 4 hours, but I’ve seen around 3 thus far. As soon as a replacement 6-cell battery is released, I will be purchasing and that should satisfy my needs.

4 out of 5 stars for this netbook due to the touchpad and inability to stream HD videos properly.

Okay, I’m just going to write a short, straight to the point review on this netbook. I first purchased this netbook here on Amazon when I received a 0 Amazon Gift-Card for completing online surveys. I originally owned an Acer Aspire and mostly IBM ThinkPads. So this was pretty much my first netbook I’ve ever owned. When I first opened it, I was surprised how small and lightweight this laptop was. It obviously has a 10.1″ screen and weighs less than 3 pounds so you can easily fit this laptop in a small backpack or even a larger purse! What you get out of the box are power cables, 3-cell battery, cleaning cloth, manuals, and the netbook. The netbook itself does a have a decent keyboard and a very sleek design compared to most other netbooks. Unlike most HP laptops, this one does not have any imprint finishes or designs on the cover. If you are getting this HP Mini or any netbook out there for the first time, it’ll take some time to get used to it since the screen is considerably much smaller and the computer runs slower. A few things I didn’t like about this netbook is that the cover of the laptop gets fingerprints very easily and the touchpad isn’t that good. Also, you’ll get only about 2 hours at most of batter life when fully charged. The main problem I have with the touchpad is that the clicking buttons are also part of the pad and you can move the mouse even by touching the clicking buttons. What happens is that your cursor may move all over the screen. Also, the screen it has is not one of those shinny, glossy ones, it’s a matte finish. This is a great laptop to buy if all you’ll need to do is listen to music, browse internet, do homework, or to check emails. If you’re like me, that creates websites and does video editing, this laptop is definitely not for you since this laptop will keep freezing. Netbooks are just for basic things and can only runs like 2-3 programs smoothly. I would definitely recommend this laptop and it runs at a very good price (8.95) when I brought it.
