HP Pavilion ZD7000 Review
HP Pavilion zd7000 without exaggeration has the best sound of all 17 inch screen notebooks we have tested so far. Maybe the Harman/Kardon stereo speakers it comes with help a bit or a lot for the clear audio.
Listening to music on this laptop or watching a movie playing in the fixed DVD+RW drive located on the right side of the laptop is a mind blowing experience.
One of the things that I like about HP zd7000 is the huge screen. It has a standard resolution of 1440 by 900 pixels. However this is not all – the laptop is aided by a great GeForce FX Go 5600 graphic card and 128 MB of RAM.
I wear contact lenses but tend to forget them at home every now and then. Despite of that it is easy to read from the display. What’s more – because it is so big one can easily view multiple documents side by side.
The device that we tested came with Windows Media Center upgrade. It has an external USB TV tuner and a remote control – for these special occasions when you feel like watching and recording tv shows on your laptop computer.
The only thing I feel is missing in HP Zd7000 is a subwoofer to fill out the bass and a set of audio control buttons on the notebook and this laptop could have been the best big screen portable multimedia device.
The model we had a chance to test had a preinstalled 802.11g Mini PCI card. A few other nice features are the 4 USB ports which is 2 more than the usual; also a FireWire port, S Video Out port and 2 PC card slots. One more thing that I need to mention while on that is that the multimedia card reader can read SD/MMC, CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro cards.
Now I should also mention what I don’t like. Like most of the other wide-screen notebooks HP ZD7000 is heavy – this is to be expected though. It weighs 9.3 pounds and is 2 inches tall. On the plus side because of its size the expanded keyboard includes a separate numerical keypad. If you rare one of these people who work frequently with numbers and I must say that the target audience for that laptops do then you will really appreciate that feature.
Another thing I like about HP pavilion ZD7000 is the extrawide touchpad. It incorporates a textured vertical scroll zone and a lock button. Because of it you can’t accidentally reposition the cursor while typing.
As I always use to say size not always guarantees a better design. I would confidently say that za7000′s battery is one of the most difficult to remove. I had to use the flat end of a screwdriver to open the bottom release. The battery is big – no doubt about that – I would even say that it is one of the biggest I have ever seen but in this case it doesn’t translate into long battery life. The one that I tested lasted an hour and 48 minutes on one charge. However chances are that you will always have an outlet all the time so the battery life shouldn’t concern you that much.
Consider this – if you will be using HP zd7000 as your primary PC you might need to consider buying HP’s $249 Notebook Expansion Base. It serves as a port replicator and at the same time is can be used as a stand to elevate the notebook screen to eye level. The notebook docks front end first into an upright sleeve and connects via a proprietary connection that is located on the left side. Package includes a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse also. However keep in mind that we didn’t test the Notebook Expansion Base.
Earlier on I mentioned that HP Pavilion Zd7000 is a perfect business laptop but it doesn’t mean that home users should not consider it when looking for a solid laptop. Zd7000 can be used as a desktop replacement that can double as a digital video recorder.
It is also perfect choice for college students because the laptop is full of features and takes limited space. Don’t forget that it is heavy and the battery life is not the great but if it stays put most of the time it really doesn’t matter.
As a conclusion I would say that if you are looking to replace your desktop computer or need a solid business laptop you should definitely take HP Pavilion Zd7000 in consideration.
